Celebrating the Life of Al Lick

Mar 14, 2024 |

In memory of Al Lick, a visionary leader whose impact on North Dakota’s juvenile justice system and the Council of Juvenile Justice Administrators (CJJA) will forever resonate, we offer our heartfelt condolences.

Al’s legacy is woven into the fabric of North Dakota’s juvenile corrections system, which he tirelessly championed into existence. As the Director of Institutions, his unwavering dedication laid the tribute foundation for a more just and compassionate approach to juvenile justice. From 1987 until his retirement in 2006, Al’s leadership as the first director of the Division of Juvenile Services set a standard of excellence that continues to inspire.

Among his many contributions, Al was a founding member of CJJA, recognizing the critical need for juvenile justice leaders to have a united national voice. In 1994, he helped establish CJJA, providing a platform for advocacy and collaboration at a time when external forces were shaping incomplete narratives about youth involved in the justice system.

As we mourn Al’s passing, let us also celebrate the profound impact he made on countless lives and the enduring legacy he leaves behind. His spirit of innovation, compassion, and dedication will continue to guide us as we work towards a more equitable and just future for all youth. Rest in peace, Al Lick.
