30 Years of CJJA

Mar 1, 2024 |

We are thrilled to commemorate a significant milestone in the journey towards juvenile justice reform – the 30th anniversary of the Council of Juvenile Justice Administrators (CJJA). Established in 1994, CJJA has been a beacon of progress and collaboration in our shared commitment to creating a more just and effective juvenile justice system.

For three decades, CJJA has tirelessly worked to improve juvenile justice systems, elevate local correctional and residential facilities, and advocate for programs that empower youth and their families. CJJA has become a vital force in reshaping the landscape of juvenile justice across the United States.

At its core, CJJA serves as a collective voice for state juvenile justice system CEOs and various local jurisdictions, fostering a collaborative environment where leaders can share insights, best practices, and innovative strategies. The organization’s dedication to facilitating communication and cooperation among diverse stakeholders has been instrumental in driving positive change.

Throughout its history, CJJA has championed policies and initiatives that prioritize rehabilitation, diversion, and community-based solutions over punitive measures. By promoting evidence-based practices and advocating for the implementation of research-driven interventions, CJJA has played a pivotal role in shaping policies that lead to better long-term outcomes for youth and their families while reducing incidents of violence in system facilities, reducing the reliance on use of force and room confinement/isolation practices, and improving the overall cultures, atmospheres, purpose of secure facility care.

As we reflect on the past 30 years, we celebrate the countless achievements and milestones that CJJA has reached. From influencing legislative reforms to establishing partnerships with the Office of Juvenile Justice and advocacy groups, the organization has been at the forefront of juvenile justice advancements. CJJA’s commitment to fostering equity, fairness, and compassion within the juvenile justice system has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless young individuals.

Looking forward, CJJA remains dedicated to its mission of creating a juvenile justice system that ensures the well-being and rehabilitation of every youth. As we embark on the next chapter, we renew our commitment to collaboration, innovation, and advocacy. Together, we can continue to build a future where every young person has the opportunity for positive growth and a chance at a successful, fulfilling life.

To all CJJA members, partners, and supporters, thank you for your unwavering dedication to juvenile justice reform. The last 30 years have been a testament to what we can achieve when we work together towards a common goal. Here’s to the past, present, and future of CJJA – may the next 30 years bring even greater progress and transformation.
